As Winter approaches the National Park draws over its lovely blanket of snow.
A long-awaited moment for snowshoers.
In the past they were a way of travelling, today they are a sport.

It is possible to snowshoe in the Pyrenees National Park but doing it anywhere and anyhow can damage the environment.

To respect sleeping wildlife and flora, please follow these simple rules :

- Avoid following animal tracks. They are weakened by the cold and using up any extra energy to flee could be fatal to them. Life in Winter is very hard.
- Walk in small groups and in a line so as to leave only one track.
- Do not walk across young tree plantations.
- Take your rubbish home with you, even when biodegradables, as they attract opportunist species like foxes or ravens which can create an ecological imbalance.
- Remember that dogs are not allowed in the National Park.
- Carefully prepare your outings : hiking in Winter has additional risks related to the cold, fog and avalanches.

Respect mountain safety rules, consult the weather forecast, get information about the stability of the snow, bring a guide book, a map and a compass along.

And if it is your first time on snowshoes it is best to try with a professional first...
